Sikaiana

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Sikaiana is a small atoll in the south Pacific Ocean. It sits northeast of Malaita in the Solomon Islands. An atoll is a ring of coral. This ring holds a lagoon called Te Moana inside. The coral reef is totally enclosed. This reef keeps the lagoon water safe. Sikaiana is a very remote place. It is over 200 kilometres from any other islands. There is no safe anchorage for boats nearby. This makes it hard for outsiders to visit.

The atoll has many different parts. The main island is at the easternmost corner. It is simply called Sikaiana. In the west, there are three small islands. These are Tehaolei, Matuiloto, and Matuavi. Tehaolei is in the north. Matuiloto is in the west. Matuavi is in the south. There are also two artificial islands. These man-made islands sit on the reef. They are named Te Palena and Hakatai'atata.

The history of the islands is interesting. Long ago, the place was called the Stewart Islands. In 1893, the United Kingdom made a protectorate. This was a way to rule the Solomon Islands. They wanted to regulate a practice called blackbirding. This was when people were recruited for labour plantations in Queensland. Sikaiana was not part of that first group. However, the rules changed on 21 June 1897. On that day, the protectorate was extended to Sikaiana. It also included Rennell and Bellona Islands.

About 300 people live on Sikaiana today. These people are of Polynesian descent. This is different from the main Solomon Islands. Most people there are of Melanesian descent. Because of this, experts call Sikaiana a Polynesian outlier. The people belong to the Anglican Church. They are part of the Diocese of Southern Malaita and Sikaiana. You can even find parts of the Book of Common Prayer in the Sikaiana language. This document dates back to 1932.

Sikaiana is part of the Malaita Province. It is an outlying region of that province. The atoll sits at 8°25′0″S and 162°52′0″E. It is a tropical place with a coral reef. The land surface is very small. It is a tiny part of the huge Pacific Ocean. Even though it is far away, it has a unique culture. The people and their language make it a special place.
