Sikaiana

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Sikaiana is a small atoll in the south Pacific Ocean. An atoll is a ring of coral around a lagoon. This lagoon is called Te Moana. A coral reef keeps the water inside. Sikaiana is part of the Solomon Islands. It sits near Malaita. It is a long way from other islands. It is over 200 kilometres away from any other land. This makes it hard for outsiders to visit. There is no safe place for boats to stop nearby.

The main island is at the east end. Three small islands sit in the west. Their names are Tehaolei, Matuiloto, and Matuavi. There are also two man-made islands on the reef. They are called Te Palena and Hakatai'atata.

About 300 people live here. They are of Polynesian descent. This is different from most people in the Solomon Islands. Most people here belong to the Anglican Church. In the past, the United Kingdom ruled this area. They added Sikaiana to their rule in 1897.
