Some islands sit outside this main area. These are called Polynesian outliers. They are found in two other places called Micronesia and Melanesia.

These islands are often small and far away.

Long ago, seafaring people sailed to these islands. They likely came from Tonga, Samoa, or Tuvalu. They brought their own way of talking with them. People still speak Polynesian languages on these islands today.

Some outlier groups live near other people. They may learn new ways from their neighbors. Other groups live alone on their islands. This helps them keep their old ways.

There are many outlier groups. The Solomon Islands has seven different groups. These include Anuta and Tikopia. Other groups live in Vanuatu and New Caledonia. Even Nukuoro is an outlier. It is very far away. It was settled in the 1700s.
