The land around Changzhou has many paths for water. These are called waterways, and they include many canals and rivers. One very famous path is the Beijing–Hangzhou Grand Canal. There are also the Wuyi Canal and the Tai Ge Canal. In the 1930s, a man named Zhou Chen worked to control the water after big floods. He helped turn parts of lakes into fields for farming. Because of this, lakes like Furong, Yang, and Linjin grew smaller over twenty years. The weather here is humid and subtropical. This means the summers are hot and wet, while the winters are cool.

Changzhou has a very long history. In the past, people knew the area by different names. It was once called Yanling, Lanling, and Jinling. Many important people were born here too. One famous man was Zhou Youguang. He was a linguist who helped create the pinyin system. This system uses letters to show how Chinese words sound. The city has also seen many changes in how it is run. For example, Wujin County became Wujin City in 1995. Later, in 1999, some towns were moved into different parts of the city.

Many people live in this busy area. The 2020 census showed that 5,278,121 people lived in the Changzhou Municipality. This was a 1.4% increase from the census before that. The city is divided into several parts. There are five districts and one county-level city named Liyang. Some districts, like Tianning, have many people living close together. Other areas, like Wujin, are much larger. The city is a major place for travel. It has a metro system with different lines. There are also big train stations and an airport in the Xinbei District.

There are many exciting things to see in Changzhou. One popular spot is the China Dinosaurs Park. It is a huge park with many fossils and bones. You can ride the Brontosaurus Roller Coaster there. The park even has a giant panda and sea lions. Another special place is the Tianning Temple. It is one of the largest Zen Buddhist temples in China. The temple has a very tall tower called a pagoda. This pagoda was first built during the Tang dynasty. Today, it is the tallest pagoda in China and might be the tallest in the world.
