People in this area were among the first to grow rice. In the past, the city was known by different names like Zhufang or Jingkou. It served as a strategic gateway and a military outpost. The city also grew when many people moved to the area from the north. This helped the city become a major center for controlling the region. Over many centuries, it changed from a small area into a powerful administrative center.

Zhenjiang has always been a place of making and trading fine things. During the Song dynasty, the city was very wealthy. It produced beautiful silks, satins, and silverware for emperors.

Experts found a hoard of over 900 silver objects near a bridge there. The city was also famous for its many ships. A traveler once noted that it had more shipping than almost any other city. Some of these ships were even painted white. They were used as floating businesses, like taverns for people to gather.

Today, the city is still a busy place for moving goods. It is one of China's busiest ports for domestic commerce.

Large amounts of grain, cotton, oils, and lumber are traded here. The city also has industries for making paper pulp and processing food. It is well connected to other major places by rail. This helps people and products move quickly between Shanghai and Nanjing. The city's weather is humid and subtropical. This means there is a lot of rain during the monsoon season.

One of the most famous things from Zhenjiang is Chinkiang vinegar. This is a dark, fragrant vinegar used in many Chinese meals. It is known both inside China and in other parts of the world. You can also find beautiful sites like the Jinshan Temple.
