He also added two extra sections for extra help. These sections include tables and a critical analysis.

Making this book was a huge task for a team of people.

Most traditional Chinese histories used a biographical style. That older method focused on separate lists of annals for rulers and biographies for officials. Sima Guang found that biographical styles were often too diffuse and difficult to organize. He preferred a chronological style, which means the history follows a strict year-by-year timeline. This approach helps readers understand the direct connections between different events. He also included two supplemental sections: tables and a critical analysis section.

Sima Guang had a clear purpose for writing this history. He believed that a ruler should know the history of the rise and fall of dynasties. He wanted to record the joys and sorrows of the people. By studying these events, he hoped the good could serve as a model for others. He also believed the evil could serve as a warning. This goal made the Zizhi Tongjian more than just a list of dates. It was intended to be a tool for effective government and moral guidance.

Since its publication, the Zizhi Tongjian has influenced many other works.

In the 12th century, Zhu Xi created a condensed version called the Zizhi Tongjian Gangmu. This version was later translated into Manchu for the Qing Kangxi Emperor. A French Jesuit missionary named Joseph-Anne-Marie de Moyriac de Mailla even translated it into French. His 12-volume translation was published in Paris between 1777 and 1783. Other historians, like Léon Wieger and Rafe de Crespigny, have also produced translations or works based on this text. These various versions show how much the original work mattered to the world.

Today, the Zizhi Tongjian remains a cornerstone of historical study. While many copies exist, the original manuscripts are rare. Only eight surviving chapters of the original manuscript remain.
