It was published in 1084 during the Northern Song dynasty. This work serves as a massive record of events spanning nearly 1,400 years. It covers the period from 403 BC to 959 AD. The text documents the history of 16 different dynasties. Because of its depth, scholars consider it a vital reference for understanding the past. It provides a reliable way to see how historical events unfolded over many centuries.

To create this history, Sima Guang used a specific chronological style.

Most traditional Chinese histories used a biographical style. That older method focused on separate lists of annals for rulers and biographies for officials. Sima Guang found that biographical styles were often too diffuse and difficult to organize. He preferred a chronological style, which means the history follows a strict year-by-year timeline. This approach helps readers understand the direct connections between different events. He also included two supplemental sections: tables and a critical analysis section.

The creation of the Zizhi Tongjian was a massive undertaking that required 19 years of labor.

In 1065, Emperor Yingzong of Song commissioned Sima Guang to lead the project. Sima Guang was a high official who lived from 1019 to 1086. The Emperor provided the necessary funding and the authority to hire a staff. Sima Guang began with assistants named Liu Shu and Zhao Junxi. Later, he brought in Liu Ban, who was an expert in Han history. In 1070, Emperor Shenzong approved the addition of Fan Zuyu, an expert in Tang history. This team worked together to distill information from 322 different sources.

The scale of the finished work is truly enormous. The main text is organized into 294 scrolls, which function like chapters. In total, the work contains approximately 3 million Chinese characters. The history covers many major eras with varying levels of detail. For example, the text includes 60 chapters regarding the Han dynasty. It also features 81 chapters covering the Tang dynasty. Other sections include 40 chapters on the Jin dynasty and 22 chapters on the Liang dynasty. Even smaller eras, like the Qin, are documented with three dedicated chapters.

Sima Guang had a clear purpose for writing this history. He believed that a ruler should know the history of the rise and fall of dynasties. He wanted to record the joys and sorrows of the people. By studying these events, he hoped the good could serve as a model for others. He also believed the evil could serve as a warning. This goal made the Zizhi Tongjian more than just a list of dates. It was intended to be a tool for effective government and moral guidance.

Since its publication, the Zizhi Tongjian has influenced many other works.

In the 12th century, Zhu Xi created a condensed version called the Zizhi Tongjian Gangmu. This version was later translated into Manchu for the Qing Kangxi Emperor. A French Jesuit missionary named Joseph-Anne-Marie de Moyriac de Mailla even translated it into French. His 12-volume translation was published in Paris between 1777 and 1783. Other historians, like Léon Wieger and Rafe de Crespigny, have also produced translations or works based on this text. These various versions show how much the original work mattered to the world.

Today, the Zizhi Tongjian remains a cornerstone of historical study. While many copies exist, the original manuscripts are rare. Only eight surviving chapters of the original manuscript remain.

These precious documents are kept at the National Library of China Ancient Books Library in Beijing. The work continues to be a subject of academic debate. Scholars study Sima Guang's potential political biases and his editing processes. Despite these debates, it remains an essential tool for anyone studying the complex history of China.
