Shu Han

history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Shu Han was a powerful state in ancient China. It existed during a famous time called the Three Kingdoms period. This state was one of three major powers fighting for control. The land was located in areas we call Sichuan, Chongqing, and Yunnan today. People often called it "Shu" because it sat on an old kingdom named Shu.

The leaders actually called their state "Han." They believed they were the true successors to the old Han dynasty.

Building the state took many careful steps and brave choices. A man named Liu Bei was the founder. He was a distant relative of the old Han imperial family. With help from his advisor Zhuge Liang, he took over new lands. He first gained parts of Jing Province in 208 and 209. Later, he took Yi Province between 212 and 214. By 219, he had captured Hanzhong from his rival, Cao Cao.

These victories allowed him to become a king.

Life in Shu Han changed after Liu Bei died in 223. He left his young son, Liu Shan, to rule the state. Liu Shan was only 16 years old at the time. Because the king was so young, Zhuge Liang acted as a leader. He managed most of the government and made big decisions. Shu Han was the smallest of the three powers. It did not have as many people as the state of Wei. This made it hard to win big wars.

Zhuge Liang worked very hard to keep Shu Han strong. He led five military campaigns against the state of Wei. These battles happened between the years 228 and 234. He fought to reach the strategic city of Chang'an. These wars were very difficult and used many resources. Zhuge Liang died during one of these long battles. After him, leaders like Jiang Wan and Fei Yi took charge. Later, a general named Jiang Wei led more campaigns to protect the land.

Shu Han was about more than just fighting wars. The state worked on many helpful projects for its people. They built new roads and clever irrigation systems. One famous project was the Zipingpu Dam near Chengdu. This dam is so well-made that it is still used today! These works helped trade grow in southwestern China. Eventually, the state of Wei attacked and conquered Shu in 263. Liu Shan surrendered, and the era of Shu Han came to an end.
