The State of Jin was once a very large and powerful land. Over many years, the way Jin was ruled began to change. Instead of the ruling family holding all the power, other families grew strong. These families were called clans. Some clans grew from people who served the dukes of Jin. For example, the House of Zhao came from a man named Zhao Cui. The House of Wei came from a man named Wei Wu. The House of Han came from Han Wan, who was an uncle to Duke Wu.

For a long time, these clans held many titles and lands. By the late Spring and Autumn period, six major clans ruled most of Jin. These were the Zhao, Wei, Han, Fan, Zhi, and Zhonghang clans. They were known as the Six Titled Retainers. These families were so powerful that the Duke of Jin became a figurehead. A figurehead is a leader who has a title but very little real power. The clans began to act like they were the true rulers of the land.

A long civil war broke out between these clans from 497 to 453 BCE. Many smaller clans were lost during these fights. The Fan and Zhonghang clans were eventually eliminated. This left only the Zhi, Zhao, Han, and Wei clans as the strongest. The Zhi clan became the most dominant of them all. They began to demand land from the other three families. This created a very tense situation in the Jin court.

In 455 BCE, the Zhi clan attacked the Zhao clan. The Zhi leader, Zhi Xiangzi, tried to force the Han and Wei clans to help him. The Zhao clan retreated to the city of Jinyang to protect themselves. The Zhi clan surrounded the city for two years. They even tried to take the water away from the city. However, the Han and Wei clans decided to change sides. They helped the Zhao by diverting a large stream of water. This water split the Zhi camp in two and helped the Zhao win.

After the Zhi clan was defeated in 453 BCE, the land was divided. The three winning families—Han, Zhao, and Wei—became their own states. People called these new lands the Three Jins. In 403 BCE, King Weilie of Zhou officially named them as equals. This event marked a big change in history. It moved the world from the Spring and Autumn period into the Warring States period. The old State of Jin finally came to an end.
