Long ago, a large land called Jin ruled a big area. For a long time, the leaders of Jin faced many problems. Instead of family members ruling, powerful families grew strong. These families were called clans. Six major clans held most of the power in Jin.

Between the years 497 and 453 BCE, a civil war broke out. This was a long fight between these clans. One clan, the Zhi, became the strongest. They tried to take land from the other clans. The Zhao, Han, and Wei clans did not want this. They worked together to stop the Zhi clan.

In 455 BCE, the Zhi clan attacked the Zhao clan. They even tried to take away the water from the Zhao city. But the Han and Wei clans changed sides to help the Zhao. They used a stream of water to split the Zhi camp in two. This helped the Zhao clan win the battle.

After the war, the land was split. The three winning clans became the states of Han, Zhao, and Wei. People called them the Three Jins. This split changed how the land was ruled forever.
