In early 1556, a massive earthquake struck China. This event took place during the Ming dynasty. It is often called the Jiajing Great Earthquake.

This shake was one of the deadliest disasters in Chinese history. It hit the Weihe River Valley in Shaanxi Province. The earthquake happened near places like Huaxian, Weinan, and Huayin. Huaxian was completely destroyed by the shaking. Many people lived in a place called the Weihe Basin. This area is part of a rift system. A rift is a place where the earth's crust pulls apart.

Scientists study how the earth moves to understand these events. The Weihe Basin formed a long time ago. It sits near the Ordos Block. Large faults, which are cracks in the earth, line the basin. These faults include the Huashan Fault and the North Qinling Fault. The earthquake likely happened because these faults ruptured. When the ground breaks along a fault, it releases energy. This energy causes the ground to shake violently. This shaking can cause the earth to open into crevices. It can also trigger large landslides.

People living in the area at that time had unique homes. Many residents lived in yaodongs. These were artificial caves carved into loess cliffs. Loess is a type of fine, wind-blown soil. While these caves provided shelter, they were not safe during a quake. The shaking caused many of these caves to collapse. This buried the people sleeping inside. Landslides from the cliffs also caused many deaths. In some counties, as many as 60% of the people died. This made the loss of life very high.

Historical records give us many details about the damage. A scholar named Qin Keda lived through the event. He wrote down what happened. He even suggested that people should crouch down during a quake. He said that even if a nest collapses, some eggs might stay safe. The shaking was strong enough to damage the Forest of Stone steles. Out of 114 Kaicheng Stone Classics, 40 were broken. In the city of Xi'an, the Small Wild Goose Pagoda lost three levels of its height.

Scientists estimate the magnitude was about 7.9.

The earthquake changed the region for a long time. After the main shake, aftershocks continued for half a year. These are smaller shakes that follow a big one. The total number of people lost was huge. About 100,000 people died from the earthquake itself. However, many more died from hunger or plagues later. In total, the population in the area dropped by 830,000 people. This loss was recorded in the Imperial hukou registration. The event affected more than 97 counties across many provinces.
