The Alhambra is a famous palace and fortress complex in Granada, Spain.

It is a very special monument of Islamic architecture. In fact, it is the only well-preserved palace from the medieval Islamic world. The name comes from the Arabic words for "the red fortress."

The walls look red because they were made of rammed earth. This earth used local clay that contains iron oxide. This gives the massive walls their distinct, reddish color. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that many people visit.

Inside the walls, the Alhambra once worked like a self-contained city.

It had its own roads, houses, and artisan workshops. There was even a tannery and a Friday mosque. To keep everyone supplied, builders made a smart water system. They built aqueducts and water channels to bring water from the mountains.

This system included devices to lift water onto the high plateau. This allowed the complex to have public baths called hammams and beautiful gardens.

Construction of the site began in 1238.

Muhammad I Ibn al-Ahmar was the first Nasrid emir and founder. He started the site as a new residence and citadel. Later Nasrid rulers kept adding to the buildings. The most important work happened in the 14th century. This was during the reigns of Yusuf I and Muhammad V. They gave the royal palaces much of their famous character. After 1492, the site became a court for Ferdinand and Isabella.

Many different styles of building can be seen here.

The Nasrid palaces use a style called Moorish architecture. This style often puts a courtyard at the center of the building. These courtyards usually have a fountain or a pool in the middle. In 1526, Charles V added a new palace in the Renaissance style. This new building sits right next to the older Nasrid palaces.

The complex also includes the Alcazaba, which is a fortress at the western end.

The decorations inside the palaces are truly amazing.

Artists used colorful tile mosaics on the lower parts of the walls. On the upper walls, they used carved stucco. They made beautiful geometric patterns and vegetal motifs. They also used Arabic inscriptions as decoration. Some ceilings feature special three-dimensional shapes called muqarnas.

These muqarnas look like hanging stalactites. One of the most famous areas is the Palace of the Lions.
