It stands in the middle of Azadi Square. This tower once marked the western entrance to the city. It is part of a larger cultural complex. This complex includes an underground museum for visitors to explore. People see the tower as a symbol of the city. It is a place where history and art meet.

The tower has a very special look. It is built with Persian-inspired architecture. The design moves from the base up toward the sky. The architect wanted this to show Iran moving toward a higher level.

The main vault is a Sasanian arch from the classical era. Above it sits a broken arch from the medieval era. A network of ribs connects these two different styles together. This shows the link between different times in Iran's history.

An architect named Hossein Amanat designed the tower. He won a competition to create the design in 1966. The tower was built to celebrate the 2,500th year of the Persian Empire. It was finished in 1971. Before it was called Azadi, it had other names. One name was Shahyad, which means "Shah's Memorial." After the 1979 revolution, the name was changed to Azadi, which means "Freedom."

Building the tower was a huge job. It is covered in 8,000 blocks of white marble. These stones came from the Isfahan province. A man named Ghanbar Rahimi supplied the stone. He was known as the "Sultan of Stone" in Iran.

The construction cost about six million dollars. This money came from five hundred Iranian industrialists. Workers even used computers to help shape the complex surfaces.

Inside the tower, there is much to discover. The basement holds the Azadi Museum. You can see old clay tablets and gold sheeting there. There is even a section for old cameras and photography tools.

The tower also has a theater for films. In 2015, an artist named Philipp Geist used lights to decorate the walls. He used colored words in English, German, and Persian. This light show helped people think about peace and time.
