The arch is very large and impressive to see. It stands about 50 meters tall and 45 meters wide. Its main vault is also very high and wide. The stone surfaces are covered with many detailed sculptures. These carvings show warriors and other important scenes from history.

A man named Jean-François Chalgrin designed the arch in 1806.

He wanted to honor those who fought for France. Building the arch was a very long job. It took two years just to lay the foundations. After Chalgrin died in 1811, Louis-Robert Goust took over the work. Construction finally finished in 1836 during the reign of Louis Philippe I. The total cost was about 10 million francs.

Many names are carved into the stone of the arch. These names include French victories and many famous generals. On the inside walls, you can find 660 names of officers. Some of these people were even from other countries.

People hold special ceremonies there every November 11.

The arch is part of a long line of monuments. This line is called the Axe historique. It runs from the Louvre courtyard to the Grande Arche de la Défense. The Arc de Triomphe was the tallest triumphal arch for a long time. It stayed the tallest until 1938. Since then, other structures like the Arch of Triumph in Pyongyang have been built. The arch remains a central symbol for the people of France.
