The bridge works using a single steel arch. This arch is very high. The designers had a hard job to do. They had to keep the bridge from blocking the view of the city. A high arch helps keep the view open for people. The bridge was built by engineers Jean Résal and Amédée Alby.

They used a style called Beaux-Arts for the design. This style includes many lovely decorations.

This bridge has a very interesting history. It is named after Tsar Alexander III of Russia. He made a special deal with France in 1892. This was called the Franco-Russian Alliance. His son, Nicholas II, laid the first stone in October 1896. The bridge was finished in 1900. It was opened for a big event called the Exposition Universelle. This was a huge World's Fair.

There are many statues on the bridge. Four gold statues of Fames watch over the water. These statues sit on heavy stone bases called socles. These socles act as weights to keep the arch steady.

On the right bank, you can see the Fame of Sciences and the Fame of the Arts. These were made by Emmanuel Frémiet. You can also see groups of lions by Georges Gardet. On the left bank, there are statues for Commerce and Industry. These were made by different artists like Jules Dalou.

You might see other bridges that look like this one. For example, the Trinity Bridge in Saint Petersburg was made to honor the same alliance. The bridge also has copper carvings of water spirits called nymphs. These are the Nymphs of the Seine and the Nymphs of the Neva.

They face each other to show the bond between the two lands. The bridge is a great way to see how art and engineering work together.
