It spans the Seine river to connect different parts of the city. Specifically, it links the Champs-Élysées quarter with the areas near the Invalides and the Eiffel Tower. Many people consider it the most ornate and extravagant bridge in all of Paris. Because of its immense beauty and historical value, it was classified as a French monument historique in 1975.

Engineering is at the heart of this structure. The bridge is a marvel of 19th-century engineering. It consists of a single, high steel arch. This specific design was chosen for a very important reason. The architects and engineers needed to ensure the bridge did not obscure important views. They wanted to keep the views of the Champs-Élysées and the Invalides clear for people.

The bridge was built by engineers Jean Résal and Amédée Alby. The design was led by architects, including Gaston Cousin.

The bridge features many different types of sculptures. Four gilt-bronze statues of Fames watch over the river. These statues are supported by massive masonry socles. In engineering, a socle is a heavy base. These socles provide a stabilizing counterweight for the steel arch. This weight helps keep the bridge steady without blocking monumental views.

At the top of these socles, you can see Fames restraining Pegasus.

Detailed sculptures decorate both banks of the river. On the right bank, you will find the Renommée des Sciences and the Renommée des Arts. These were created by the sculptor Emmanuel Frémiet. At their bases are statues representing Contemporary France and France of Charlemagne. The right bank also features lion groups by Georges Gardet. On the left bank, the themes change to the Renommée du Commerce and the Renommée de l'Industrie. These were made by different artists, such as Jules Dalou. The left bank also includes statues for the France of the Renaissance and France of Louis XIV.

The bridge also serves as a political memorial. In the center of the arches, there are reliefs of nymphs. These are called the Nymphs of the Seine and the Nymphs of the Neva. They were made using hammered copper over forms by Georges Récipon. The Nymphs of the Seine feature the arms of Paris. The Nymphs of the Neva feature the arms of Imperial Russia.

These two groups face each other to celebrate the Franco-Russian Alliance. This connection is also seen in the Trinity Bridge in Saint Petersburg.

The history of the bridge is tied to international relations. It is named after Tsar Alexander III of Russia. In 1892, he concluded the Franco-Russian Alliance. This was a major political agreement between the two nations. His son, Nicholas II, laid the foundation stone in October 1896. The construction took place between 1896 and 1900. The bridge was inaugurated in 1900 for the Exposition Universelle. This was a massive World's Fair held in Paris.

Overall, the Pont Alexandre III is a masterpiece of the Beaux-Arts style. This style is known for being exuberant and highly decorated. The bridge features Art Nouveau lamps and many mythical creatures like cherubs and winged horses. It was built to match the style of the Grand Palais, which sits on the right bank. The bridge is more than just a way to cross the water. It is a blend of heavy engineering and delicate art. It remains a central part of the Parisian landscape today.
