Tower Bridge is a world-famous landmark in London, England.

It is a unique structure that combines three different engineering styles. It is a bascule bridge, a suspension bridge, and formerly a cantilever bridge. This complex design allows the bridge to serve two vital purposes at once. It provides a way for people and vehicles to cross the River Thames. At the same time, it allows large sailing ships to reach the Pool of London. The bridge is located near the Tower of London and is owned by the City Bridge Foundation. This charitable trust was founded way back in 1282.

The bridge operates through a clever mechanical process to manage river traffic. The central span is split into two equal parts called bascules. These bascules act like giant leaves that can be raised into the air. When a ship needs to pass, the bascules lift to create a wide opening. Originally, this movement was powered by a hydraulic system using water pressure. In 1972, engineers converted the mechanism to an electro-hydraulic system. This modern version uses electricity to power the hydraulic movement. The two side spans are suspension bridges. These are held up by rods that are anchored at the abutments and through the upper walkways.

Tower Bridge consists of several distinct structural parts. The two massive bridge towers are built on large piers sunk into the riverbed. These piers contain a huge amount of concrete to provide stability. Connecting the two towers at the top are two horizontal, high-level walkways. The bridge deck itself is at a lower level for everyday traffic. The central opening span is designed with a clear width of 200 feet. When the bascules are open, the height reaches 135 feet above high water. When they are closed, the height is only 29 feet.

The history of the bridge began because London was growing rapidly. By the late 19th century, many people lived in the East End. A new river crossing was needed to connect them to the rest of the city. A committee was formed in 1875 to find a solution. They looked at many different designs. Some designs were rejected because they did not provide enough headroom for ships. In 1884, a proposal for a mechanical bridge was finally accepted. The Corporation of London (Tower Bridge) Act 1885 gave the legal permission to start building. The design was specifically chosen to match the architecture of the nearby Tower of London.

Construction was a massive undertaking that lasted eight years. Work began on 22 April 1886 and finished in 1894. The project was led by architect Sir Horace Jones and engineer Sir John Wolfe Barry.

Over the course of the project, at least 1,200 people worked on the site. The total cost to complete the bridge was £1,184,000. This was a very large sum of money at the time. The construction was divided into eight different contracts. These contracts covered everything from the metalwork to the masonry and the hydraulics. The metal superstructure alone weighed about 12,100 tons. During the building process, workers faced many challenges, including ten fatal accidents.

The bridge was officially opened on 30 June 1894. The ceremony was a major event attended by the Prince and Princess of Wales. It was described as a brilliant and historic occasion.

Today, the bridge remains a vital part of London's transport system. It is part of the London Inner Ring Road. About 40,000 people and vehicles cross the bridge every single day. It also marks the boundary of the London congestion charge zone. While it is a busy road, it is also a major tourist attraction. Visitors can explore the Victorian engine rooms and the towers through the Tower Bridge Exhibition.

Tower Bridge has survived many significant historical events. During the Second World War, it was a major target during air raids. In 1940, the high-level span took a direct hit during the London Blitz.

Despite the damage, the bridge remained an essential link for the Port of London. The high-level walkways have also had a changing history. They were closed in 1910 because they were not used much by regular pedestrians. They eventually reopened in 1982 for the public to enjoy. Now, they connect the history of Victorian engineering with the modern city of London.
