It crosses the River Thames near the Tower of London. This bridge is very important for the city's traffic. About 40,000 people cross it every single day. It serves as a boundary for the London congestion charge zone. People often confuse it with the nearby London Bridge.

The bridge works using a special design to help ships.

It has two large towers built on piers in the river. The central part has two leaves called bascules. These bascules can lift up to let big ships pass through.

Originally, the bridge used hydraulic power to move these parts. In 1972, workers changed it to an electro-hydraulic system. This means it uses both electricity and liquid to function. The two side spans are suspension bridges held by rods.

Building the bridge was a very big job.

It was built between 1886 and 1894. Horace Jones was the architect who designed its look. John Wolfe Barry was the engineer who helped build it. Henry Marc Brunel also helped with the engineering work. The design was meant to match the nearby Tower of London. It uses a Victorian Gothic style with stone and granite. This makes the bridge look beautiful and very strong.

Many people worked hard to finish this project.

At least 1,200 people worked on the construction over eight years. The total cost to build it was £1,184,000. It was officially opened on 30 June 1894. The Prince and Princess of Wales opened the bridge. The City Bridge Foundation paid for the construction. This is a charitable trust founded way back in 1282. They also maintain other London bridges like the Millennium Bridge.

You can visit many parts of the bridge today.

The bridge deck is open to cars and people. You can also visit the Tower Bridge Exhibition. This includes the twin towers and the engine rooms. The high-level walkways are also part of the exhibition. These walkways were once closed because they were not safe. They reopened in 1982 for visitors to enjoy. Now, they offer a great view of the river.
