The square serves as the namesake for a much larger neighborhood. This neighborhood stretches from the northeast to the southwest. Alexanderplatz is reputedly the most visited area in the entire city of Berlin. It is more popular with visitors than Friedrichstrasse or City West. Many tourists use the square as a starting point for exploring. Nearby, one can find the tall TV tower and the Nikolai Quarter. The Red City Hall is also situated close to the square.

The area has functioned as a center for trade and movement for centuries. In the 13th century, a hospital named St. George stood on this site. This hospital gave its name to the nearby George Gate. This gate was part of the Berlin city wall. Outside the walls, the area was mostly undeveloped until around 1400. Early settlers built simple thatched cottages in the area. Because a gallows was located nearby, people called it the "Devil's Pleasure Garden."

By the 16th century, the George Gate became a primary entry point for Berlin. Goods arrived here from places like Brandenburg and Pomerania. It also connected to large Hanseatic cities on the Baltic Sea.

During the 17th century, the landscape underwent major structural changes. Between 1658 and 1683, a citywide fortress was built using plans by the master builder Linz. This fortress featured 13 bastions connected by ramparts. A moat, measuring up to 10 meters wide, surrounded the defenses. While many old gates were closed, the George Gate remained open. This made it an even more important entrance to the city. In 1681, the city banned the trade of cattle and pig fattening within the walls. To encourage growth, Frederick William, the Great Elector, offered cheaper plots of land near the gate. This led to the rapid growth of a suburb known as the Königsstadt.

The square's name changed due to a royal visit in 1805. On 25 October 1805, the Russian Tsar Alexander I visited the city. He was welcomed on the parade grounds near the old King's Gate. To mark this event, King Frederick William III ordered the square to be renamed Alexanderplatz.

During the 19th century, the area became a place for many different workers. You could find fish wives, sand sellers, and day laborers living and working there. The square also became a major transit point for horse-drawn buses. In 1847, these buses ran every 15 minutes to Potsdamer Platz. The area even saw large-scale street fighting during the March Revolution of 1848.

By the late 1800s, the square became a modern commercial center. The Berlin city railway was opened in 1882, and the Bahnhof Alexanderplatz station followed.

The district grew with many large buildings, such as the 185-room Grand Hotel. In the early 1900s, Alexanderplatz reached its commercial heyday. Massive department stores like Wertheim and Korff opened to serve the public. The Wertheim store was particularly impressive. It featured a commercial space of 30,000 square meters. It also had a façade that stretched 1,000 meters in length. This was the longest department store façade in the world at that time.

Today, the square remains a complex system of movement and commerce. It connects three different underground subway lines to the surface. Long-distance trains and local trains also use the station's tracks.
