It has a special moving stand that can retract. This helps reveal a running track for athletics events. When the track is shown, the stadium holds 77,083 people. To make this change, forty people work for 80 hours. The rear sections lower by 7.1 meters first. Then, ten huge parts weighing 700 tons each move 15 meters. This makes it the largest modular stadium in the world.

Building this stadium was a very big job.

Leaders wanted a new place for the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Construction started on May 2, 1995, with three main builders. The total cost to build it was €364 million. The roof alone cost over €45 million to install. It was officially ready on January 28, 1998. A football match between France and Spain was the first event. This match had 78,368 people watching in the stands.

Many famous matches have happened on this grass.

In 1998, France beat Brazil 3–0 to win the World Cup. It is one of only two stadiums to host both football and rugby World Cup finals. The stadium also hosted the UEFA Champions League finals in 2000, 2006, and 2022. In 2016, it held the UEFA Euro final between France and Portugal. It even hosted the 2003 World Championships in Athletics. More recently, it was a key part of the 2024 Olympic Games.

The design of the stadium is like a piece of art.

The roof is an oval shape that weighs 13,000 tons. It uses tinted glass to let in blue and green light. This light helps the grass stay healthy. The design was inspired by a building at an airport in New York. In 2002, engineers gave the stadium a special prize for its beauty. It is known for having an elegant and light look. It is a modern marvel that brings many people together.
