He was known for being a very hard worker on the field. He played as a defensive midfielder. This means he worked hard to stop the other team from moving the ball. He was also very good at starting new plays for his teammates. One teammate even called him "the water-carrier." This was a joke about how he helped more talented players by winning the ball back. He used his strength and smarts to help his team win many games.

Deschamps was a great leader for his teams. He served as the captain for the France national team. He led his players to win the 1998 World Cup. He also led them to win the Euro 2000 trophy.

Before he was a manager, he played for many different clubs. He played in France, Italy, England, and Spain. He played for teams like Marseille, Juventus, Chelsea, and Valencia.
