Making such a giant statue required many careful steps. The sculptor, Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, chose to use copper for the outer skin.

He picked copper because it is lighter than bronze and easier to move. Gustave Eiffel built the strong metal framework inside the lady. The statue was built in France and then shipped across the ocean in crates.

Once the pieces arrived, workers assembled them on a large pedestal. This pedestal was built on what was then called Bedloe's Island.

The idea for the monument began in the 1860s. A French thinker named Édouard de Laboulaye wanted to honor American independence.

He also wanted to celebrate the end of slavery in the United States. The project faced many delays, including the Franco-Prussian War. In 1875, Laboulaye suggested that France would pay for the statue. The United States would then provide the site and build the base.

This plan helped the two nations work together on a grand goal.

There are many important details to notice on the statue. In her right hand, she holds a torch high to represent progress.

Her left hand carries a tablet with the date July 4, 1776. This date is written in Roman numerals. Her left foot steps on a broken chain and shackle. This represents the abolition of slavery after the American Civil War.

The statue was finally dedicated on October 28, 1886. President Grover Cleveland was there for the big ceremony.

The design of the lady was inspired by many old stories and art. Bartholdi used the look of Libertas, a Roman goddess of liberty.

He also used a crown that looks like a sun's rays. Even her feet follow an old style called a "Greek foot."
