She wrote this sonnet in 1883. A sonnet is a type of poem with a specific structure. Lazarus wrote these words to raise money for a pedestal. This pedestal is the base for the Statue of Liberty.

The poem helps people see the statue as a welcoming mother. It calls her the "Mother of Exiles." This title shows she welcomes people seeking new lives. Many people find great meaning in these words today.

Lazarus used her writing to help people in need. She was an activist for Jewish refugees. These people were fleeing from danger in eastern Europe. She wanted to show empathy for them. The poem describes the statue standing at the harbor gates. It mentions the "huddled masses" arriving by sea. This phrase refers to the many immigrants coming to America. The poem also mentions "imprisoned lightning." This is a way to describe the electric light in the statue's torch.

Writing the poem was not her first choice. A fundraiser named William Maxwell Evarts asked her for help. At first, Lazarus said no to the request. Then, a writer named Constance Cary Harrison spoke to her. Harrison said the poem would be important for immigrants. The poem was read at an art auction in November 1883. This auction helped fund the pedestal for the statue. Famous writer Mark Twain also gave work to the auction. The poem was later printed in the New York Times.

In 1903, the poem became a permanent part of the statue.

A friend named Georgina Schuyler worked to honor Lazarus. They put the poem on a bronze plaque. This plaque is mounted on the inner wall of the pedestal. The plaque is actually a casting rather than an engraving. There is one small mistake on the bronze plaque. It is missing a comma after the word "keep." The original handwritten paper is kept by a special historical society.

This poem has changed how we see the Statue of Liberty. It turned a monument into a symbol of hope.

Many artists and musicians use the poem in their work. It has been used in movies and songs. One song is from the movie An American Tail. The poem's words even appear on a silver dollar coin. Many poets around the world translate it into other languages. It remains a very important part of American culture.
