"Annabel Lee" is a very famous poem written by the American author Edgar Allan Poe.

It was the last complete poem he ever wrote. The poem tells a story about a love that is incredibly strong. The narrator says he fell in love with Annabel Lee when they were both very young. They lived in a beautiful "kingdom by the sea." Their love was so intense that the narrator believes even the angels were jealous. This intense feeling is what makes the poem so special to readers. It explores how love can stay alive even after someone is gone.

The poem follows a specific way of writing. Poe called it a ballad, which is a type of poem that often tells a story.

It uses many repeated words and phrases to create a sad and mournful feeling. The poem is made of six different parts called stanzas. Some stanzas have six lines, while others have seven or eight lines. The way the words rhyme changes slightly in each part. This structure helps the reader feel the deep sadness of the narrator. It makes the story of the sea and the stars feel very real.

Poe wrote this poem in May 1849.

He did not live to see it published in a book. He died in 1849, and the poem appeared in newspapers shortly after. One version was published in the New-York Daily Tribune on October 9, 1849. This was only two days after Poe passed away. The Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore has found 11 different versions of the poem. These versions were printed between 1849 and 1850. Some versions even have slightly different words in the very last line.

Many people wonder who the real Annabel Lee was.

Some believe she was Poe's wife, Virginia Eliza Clemm Poe. She was someone he loved from a young age. Other people think she might have been a childhood sweetheart named Sarah Elmira Royster. Some critics believe Annabel Lee was not a real person at all. They think she was just a character from Poe's gloomy imagination. It is a mystery that people still debate today. This mystery adds to the wonder of the poem.

Because this poem is so powerful, many artists use it for their own work.

Many singers have turned the poem into songs. For example, the singer Stevie Nicks recorded a version of it. The band Alesana even made three whole albums based on the poem. You can find the poem's influence in books and movies too. The author Vladimir Nabokov used the idea for his famous novel, Lolita. Even the Disney movie Holes uses the poem to show feelings. It shows how a single poem can live on for a long time.
