The story happens on a dark night in December. A lonely student sits by a fire reading old books. He hears a tapping at his door and his window. A mysterious raven flies into his room and sits on a white statue. This statue is a bust of Pallas, the Greek goddess of wisdom.

The man asks the bird questions about his life. To his surprise, the raven answers with only one word: "Nevermore." This repeated word makes the man feel much worse.

Edgar Allan Poe worked very hard to write this poem. He said he wrote it in a logical and careful way. He wanted it to be popular with many different readers. Poe was inspired by a talking raven in a book by Charles Dickens. That book was called "Barnaby Rudge," which was written in 1841.

Poe wanted his bird to be more dramatic and symbolic than Dickens's bird. He chose a raven because it could speak but did not reason.

The poem has a very specific and complex structure. It is made of 18 stanzas, and each stanza has six lines. Poe used a special rhythm called trochaic octameter. This means each line has eight beats with a strong and weak pattern. He also used internal rhyme and alliteration to make it sound musical.

He based this rhythm on a poem called "Lady Geraldine's Courtship." This helped the poem have a hypnotic and steady feeling.

Many old stories and myths are hidden inside the poem. The raven sitting on Pallas suggests the man is a scholar. The bird is also linked to the Roman god Pluto. This makes the raven seem like a messenger from the afterlife. Poe even mentions the "Balm of Gilead" from the Bible.
