This area was once the ancient town of Gurgānj. It served as the capital for the Khwarazm region. Today, it is a very important archaeological site. It sits within a large, protected landscape zone. In 2005, UNESCO added the ruins to its World Heritage List. The city had a population of 37,176 people in 2022.

Many beautiful monuments from the 11th to 16th centuries still stand. These buildings show amazing craftsmanship and style. The Kutlug Timur minaret is a very striking tower. It is 60 meters tall and stands as the highest monument in the park.

These tiles form patterns of flowers and stars to look like the heavens.

The city rose to great power between the 10th and 14th centuries. It was a major center for trade on the Silk Road. This path connected the east and the west. Because of its location, the city became very wealthy. It helped science and culture grow in Central Asia. It was even a rival to the famous city of Bukhara. The city also had a large dam to help with farming. This dam helped water the land near the river.

History brought many hard times to this place. In 1221, Genghis Khan and the Mongols attacked the city. This was a very violent time in history. The city was later attacked by a leader named Timur. In 1388, Timur destroyed the city and its water systems.

Even though the old city is gone, much remains to be studied. Archaeologists like Alexander Yakubovsky began researching the site in 1929. They found that the area had strong structures as far back as the 5th century BC.
