It sits within a large area called the Tarim Basin. The city is one of the westernmost places in China. It is located very close to the borders of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Kashgar is a very important oasis in this region. An oasis is a place in a dry area where there is water.

This water allowed life and travel to thrive in the desert.

For a very long time, Kashgar has been a key stop on the Silk Road.

This was a famous path that linked China to Central Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Because so many travelers passed through, many different cultures met there. The city has seen many different empires rule over it. These include the Chinese, Turkic, Mongol, and Tibetan empires. Many battles were also fought on the steppes near the city. It is one of the oldest cities where people have lived without stopping for over 2,000 years.

History tells us many different names for this place.

Long ago, it was known as Shufu or Shule. Shufu was the name for the old city where the Uyghur people lived. Shule was the name for a new city built by Han Chinese settlers. A famous Roman geographer named Ptolemy called the city Kasi. In the year 644, a Buddhist scholar named Xuanzang called it Kasha. The name Kashgar itself might come from Persian or Russian roots. Scholars still debate exactly how the name began.

Kashgar has grown much larger over the centuries.

The larger Kashgar Prefecture has about 4 million people living in its area. In 2010, the city became a Special Economic Zone. This makes it the only city in western China with that special title.

Today, Kashgar is a busy and important center.
