It is the largest province-level area in the whole country. This land sits at a crossroads between East Asia and Central Asia. Many different nations share borders with Xinjiang. These neighbors include Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.

Because it is so large, it covers about one-sixth of China's total land. It is the 8th-largest country subdivision in the entire world.

The landscape is shaped by huge mountain ranges. The Karakoram, Kunlun, and Tian Shan mountains mark many of the borders.

These tall mountains divide the land into two main parts. The north side is called Dzungaria. This area is mostly a dry steppe. The south side is the Tarim Basin.

This southern part contains the huge Taklamakan Desert.

Most of the land is very dry. In fact, only about 9.7% of the area is fit for people to live on.

History has seen many different people rule this land. For at least 2,500 years, many empires have fought for control.

The Han Empire once set up a protectorate here to guard the Silk Road. This was a famous path for trade. Later, the Qing dynasty ruled the area in the 18th century. In 1949, it became part of the People's Republic of China. In 1955, its status changed from a province to an autonomous region. This means it has special rules for its local groups.

Many different ethnic groups call Xinjiang home. These include the Uyghurs, Han Chinese, Hui, Kazakhs, and Kyrgyz.

Other groups include Mongols, Russians, Sibe, Tajiks, and Tibetans. There are over 25 million people living in the region. Because the land is so varied, people live in different ways. Some live in the mountain valleys, while others live in oases near the desert. The region is also very important for energy. It is China's largest producer of natural gas and has much oil.

The name "Xinjiang" actually means "new frontier" or "new territory."

In the past, the area had many other names. Some called the southern part Altishahr, which means "the six cities." The region has always been a place where different cultures meet. This mix of people and places makes it very unique. Today, it remains a vital part of the country's geography and economy.
