Dzungaria is a large region in Northwest China. It is also called Northern Xinjiang or Beijiang.

High mountains act like walls around this land. The Altai Mountains sit to the north. The Tian Shan mountains are to the south. To the west, the land borders Kazakhstan. To the east, it borders Mongolia. This area is a very important part of the Xinjiang province. It is the center for heavy industry in the region. It also generates most of the money for the province.

The heart of this land is the Dzungarian Basin. It is a triangular shape with a desert in the middle. This desert is called the Gurbantünggüt Desert.

Most of the land is a semi-desert. This means it is partly dry and partly grassy. A gap in the mountains lets in moist air. This air helps more plants grow than in other dry areas. You can find wild camels and jerboas living here. The weather can get very cold. In the winter, temperatures can drop to -40 degrees.

Many different groups of people have lived here throughout history. Long ago, people like the Tocharians lived in this area. Later, the Dzungar people lived here in the 17th and 18th centuries. The name Dzungaria comes from their name. In Mongolian, "Zun Gar" means "left hand." This refers to where the Western Mongols were located. The Qing dynasty later took control of the area. They eventually joined Dzungaria with the Tarim Basin. This created the single province we call Xinjiang today.

Life in Dzungaria is connected to the mountains and the earth. Farmers grow crops like wheat, barley, and sugar beets. They also raise animals like cattle, sheep, and horses. To water their fields, they use melted snow from the white mountain tops.

The ground holds many valuable things. There are large deposits of coal, gold, and iron. There are also big oil fields, like the ones at Karamay. These resources bring many workers to the region. People move to cities like Ürümqi to find jobs in these industries.

Traveling through Dzungaria has always been important. In the past, people used the Silk Road to trade. Travelers could go north through Dzungaria or south through the Tarim Basin. The north side was good for people moving with animals. This is because Dzungaria has a fair amount of grass for them. Today, trade still happens through important spots like the Dzungarian Gate. A highway and a railway connect China to Kazakhstan there. This keeps the region linked to the rest of the world.
