Xinjiang is a massive autonomous region in northwest China.

It sits at the crossroads of East Asia and Central Asia. This region is the largest province-level division in China. It is also the 8th-largest country subdivision in the world. Xinjiang covers over 1.6 million square kilometers. This area is roughly comparable in size to the country of Iran. It makes up about one-sixth of China's total territory. The region is home to about 25 million inhabitants.

The geography of Xinjiang is defined by massive mountain ranges. The Karakoram, Kunlun, and Tian Shan mountains occupy much of the borders.

These ranges divide the land into two distinct parts. The north is the Dzungarian Basin, also called Dzungaria. This area consists mostly of dry steppe. The south is the Tarim Basin.

The Tarim Basin contains the massive Taklamakan Desert.

In the east, the Turpan Depression is located. The landscape is very harsh for most people. Only about 9.7% of the land is fit for human habitation.

Xinjiang shares borders with many different nations. To the north is Russia. To the east are Mongolia and the provinces of Gansu and Qinghai. To the south lie the Tibet Autonomous Region and India.

Because of these borders, the region has always been a meeting point for different cultures. The historic Silk Road ran through this territory. It connected the east to the northwestern border of the region.

The history of this land spans at least 2,500 years. Many different empires have vied for control over the territory. Between the 2nd century BC and 2nd century AD, the Han Empire established the Protectorate of the Western Regions.

This was done to secure the profitable Silk Road routes. Later, the Tang Empire established the Anxi Protectorate in 640. In the 18th century, the Qing dynasty came to rule the area. The Qing suppressed the Revolt of the Altishahr Khojas in 1759. This event helped merge the northern and southern regions into one identity. This identity was called "Xiyu Xinjiang," or "Western Regions' New Frontier."

The name "Xinjiang" itself has a specific meaning. It can be translated as "new frontier" or "new territory."

In 1955, the administrative status changed from a province to an autonomous region. The official name became the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. This change happened because of objections from Uyghur members of the Communist Party. They felt the name "Xinjiang" sounded colonialist. Seypidin Azizi, the first chairman, argued that autonomy belongs to nationalities, not mountains. Consequently, the name was adjusted to include "Uygur."

Many different ethnic groups live in Xinjiang today. These include the Han Chinese, Hui, Kazakhs, and Kyrgyz.

Other groups include Mongols, Russians, Sibe, Tajiks, Tibetans, and Uyghurs. There are more than a dozen autonomous prefectures and counties for minorities. The region is also very important for China's economy. Abundant oil and mineral reserves have been found there. In recent decades, it has become China's largest natural-gas-producing region.

Recent history has also seen periods of significant unrest. From the 1990s to the 2010s, the region experienced separatist conflict. This was linked to the East Turkestan independence movement and radical Islam. These conflicts resulted in occasional terrorist attacks and clashes. The Chinese government responded with policies that some describe as human rights abuses. Some observers have even used the term genocide to describe these actions against Uyghurs and other minorities. This remains a complex and serious part of the region's modern history.
