A famous event called the Battle of Talas happened in 751 CE. This fight took place along the Talas River. It was between the Chinese Tang dynasty and the Arab Abbasid Caliphate. This battle changed things for the whole world. One result was that paper was brought to the West. This happened because the Arabs captured Chinese papermakers. This helped the way people shared information.

The city has had many different names over the centuries. In the 1800s, it was called Auliye-Ata. Later, it was renamed Mirzoyan in 1936. Then, it became Dzhambul in 1938. Finally, the name was changed back to Taraz in 1997. Today, the city is growing very fast. About 428,000 people live there as of 2023.

Archaeologists have found many treasures in the river valley. They found bronze statues of kings and old ornaments. These items show that people lived there during the bronze age. You can still see old buildings like the Aisha-Bibi mausoleum. The city once had paved streets and even a water system. This system used pipes made of terracotta. These discoveries help us see how people lived long ago.
