The Battle of Talas was a major clash between two huge empires.

In July 751, the Tang dynasty from China met the Abbasid Caliphate. These two powers fought for control over lands near the Silk Road. This area was a busy path for trade and ideas. The fight happened near the Talas River. This river is located near the border of modern Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

This event changed the history of Central Asia forever.

The battle was a very difficult job for both sides. The Tang army was led by a general named Gao Xianzhi. The Abbasid army was led by Ziyad ibn Salih. For five days, the two armies fought in a stalemate. They used shield walls to protect their soldiers. Archers and crossbowmen shot arrows from behind these shields. Cavalry riders would sometimes charge to try and break through.

On the fifth day, things changed quickly. A group of Karluk mercenaries changed sides to help the Abbasids. They attacked the Tang army from the rear while the Abbasids attacked from the front.

Long before this battle, the region was already changing. The Tang dynasty had expanded into the Tarim Basin in 692. They used oasis towns to gain wealth from trade. At the same time, the Abbasid Caliphate was growing. In 750, the Abbasid Caliphate took over after the Umayyad Caliphate fell. Many different groups lived in these lands, including the Türgesh tribes. These tribes were known for making iron weapons.

The Karluks were also important because they exported iron.

History books give different numbers for the battle. Some Chinese sources say the Abbasid army had 200,000 soldiers. Other records say the Chinese forces had 100,000 people. One source says 30,000 people died during the fight. Arabic records suggest the Chinese lost between 45,000 and 50,000 soldiers. Many others were taken as prisoners.

After the battle, the Tang general had to retreat through the mountains. Most of his troops were captured or lost during the journey. Very few soldiers made it back to their home territory.

This battle had a lasting impact on the world. It marked the end of Tang influence in the region of Transoxiana. After this, the area fell under Islamic political power. This helped spread Islamic religion, art, and new traditions.

Some stories say that Chinese prisoners taught people how to make paper. This was a huge change for how people wrote things down. Even though the borders did not change much, the culture did. The battle helped shape the way people live in Central Asia today.
