One was the Tang dynasty from China. The other was the Abbasid Caliphate. Both groups wanted to control the lands near the Silk Road. This was a famous trade route.

The Tang army was led by Gao Xianzhi. The Abbasid army was led by Ziyad ibn Salih. The two sides fought for five days. They used shields, spears, and bows. On the fifth day, a group called the Karluks changed sides. They were part of the Tang army, but they joined the Abbasids instead. This helped the Abbasids win the battle.

This fight changed the region forever. The Tang leaders stopped moving west. Instead, the Abbasid empire grew in that area. This helped spread new ideas and religion.
