The city's history began with very ancient settlements. Archaeologists found bronze statues of kings and chest ornaments in the Talas River valley. These items prove people lived there during the Bronze Age. By the 7th or 8th centuries B.C., tribal unions known as Saka Scythians formed in this territory. Later, a Xiongnu leader named Zhizhi built a fortress in the area. This fortress dates back to the 1st century B.C. This long history is why UNESCO recognized Taraz for its 2,000th anniversary in 2001.

During the medieval period, Taraz was a vital hub on the Silk Road. This was a massive network of trade routes connecting China, India, Byzantium, and Persia. The city grew as a fortified trade center. Its gentle climate and fertile soil attracted many farmers and stock-breeders. The Sogdian merchants controlled much of this trade. They even negotiated with the Byzantine Empire. In 568 CE, Byzantine ambassadors arrived at the court of Istemi Yabgu in Taraz. The Buddhist monk Xuanzang visited the city in 630 CE. He described it as a city settled by merchants from many different nations.

A major turning point occurred in 751 CE during the Battle of Talas. This conflict took place along the Talas River in the Talas valley. It was fought between the Chinese Tang dynasty and the Arab Abbasid Caliphate. This battle had a huge impact on global history. One indirect result was the introduction of paper to the West. This happened because the Arab forces captured Chinese papermakers. This event changed how information was shared across the world.

As time passed, the city saw many different rulers. In the 9th century, the Persian Samanids captured Taraz in 893. During this time, Islam began to spread through the region. Existing religions like Buddhism, Christianity, and Mazdaism were gradually replaced. Later, the Turkic Karakhanids ruled Taraz from the 10th to the 12th century. This was a peak period for the city. Taraz became a powerful center of culture and economy. It even had an advanced underground water system made of terracotta pipes. The city also featured paved streets and a unique building called the Taraz Banya.

The city's name and identity changed many times through different eras. In the late 18th century, a Kokand fortress was established there. By 1864, the city was named Auliye-Ata. The Russian Empire annexed the area during this period. In 1936, the city was renamed Mirzoyan. After 1938, it became Dzhambul. The spelling changed to Jambyl in 1993. Finally, the name was officially changed back to Taraz in 1997.

Today, Taraz is a rapidly growing urban center. In 1989, the population was much smaller. By the 1999 census, it had 330,100 people. This was a 9% increase from the previous decade. It became one of the fastest-growing cities in Kazakhstan. As of April 2023, the population reached 428,000. The city remains a key location in the country's southern landscape. It connects its ancient past with a modern, growing future.
