Sistani was born on August 4, 1930, in Mashhad, Iran. His family has a long history of being religious leaders. They claim to be descendants of Husayn ibn Ali. This makes his family a Sayyid family. Even though his name sounds like a place in Iran, his family is of Arab origin.

Sistani spent many years studying to become a great scholar. He began his religious education as a young child in Mashhad. Later, he went to the city of Qom to study. There, he learned from the famous Grand Ayatollah Seyyed Hossein Borujerdi. In 1951, Sistani moved to Iraq to continue his learning. He studied in Najaf under Grand Ayatollah Abu al-Qasim al-Khoei. By the year 1960, he reached the rank of mujtahid. This is a person who can make important religious decisions. After Khoei died in 1992, Sistani's peers chose him to lead the schools in Najaf.

Since the year 2003, Sistani has had a huge role in Iraq. He wants the country to be a democracy. This means he believes the people should vote for their leaders. He calls for elections that are free and fair for everyone. He even told Shia women that they have a religious duty to vote. Sistani wants all Iraqi citizens to participate in making their government. He also wants people to respect the rule of law. He believes that no foreign group should force its will on the Iraqi people. He wants Iraqis to be able to make their own choices.

Sistani is also known for helping people through charity. His followers give him a portion of their earnings called khums. He uses this money to help others in many ways. His office supports 35,000 students in Qom and 10,000 in Mashhad. He also helps 4,000 students in Isfahan.
