Ibn Abidin was a very important Islamic scholar and jurist. A jurist is a person who studies and explains the law. He lived in the city of Damascus, Syria, during the Ottoman era.

He was a leading expert in the Hanafi school of law. This school is one of the major ways people follow Islamic law. In Damascus, he held the title of Amin al-fatwa. This meant he was the official mufti for the city.

People would go to him with many different legal questions. He was a state employee who helped keep the law working for everyone.

To be a mufti, a person must follow a specific way of thinking. First, they look at what the Prophet did and the Qur'an. Then, they look at what the leaders of their school of law decided. Finally, they look at the decisions made by older muftis.

Ibn Abidin was known for being a very determined student. He even memorized the Qur'an before he was fully grown. He studied under many famous teachers to perfect his work. After a lot of hard work, he earned four degrees of authorization. This showed he was highly trained to answer difficult questions.

Ibn Abidin had some ideas that were a bit different from others. He believed that laws should be flexible to help people. He thought that local customs, called urf, were very important.

He said that many rules change as time passes. He believed that if laws were too rigid, they might cause people to suffer. He wanted the law to meet the needs of the people living in his time. This was a way to make sure the law helped rather than hurt. He used his own deep thinking, called ijtihad, to find answers when old books did not have them.

He also used his knowledge to help people with marriage rules. In his time, marriage was a huge part of society. He looked closely at how different social classes were treated.

For example, he thought about how different jobs changed a person's status. He also gave guidance on how to help orphans who needed a guardian. He even wrote about what husbands should provide for their wives. He believed a husband had to provide food based on the wife's social standing. This helped make sure everyone was treated fairly in their homes.

Ibn Abidin was a very busy writer who composed over 50 works. His most famous book is called Radd al-Muhtar.

This book is still used as a main text for the Hanafi school today. It is much larger and more detailed than many other law books. He wrote about many things, including medicine and poems. He died in the year 1836 at the age of 54. His death was a sad time for his teachers and his city. He was buried in Damascus near other great scholars he respected.
