People respected him because he was a very good critic. He could examine these records with great skill. He was a leading authority on how to read the Qur'an correctly. His work helped many people understand history and faith better.

Al-Dhahabi followed a path of constant learning. He started his studies of hadith when he was eighteen years old. He did not stay in one place to learn. Instead, he traveled to many different cities. He visited places like Damascus, Cairo, and Alexandria. He also went to Jerusalem, Homs, and Aleppo. He even traveled to the Hijaz region. This long journey helped him meet many different teachers. He eventually returned to Damascus to teach and write his own books.

He was born in Damascus on October 5, 1274. His family was of Turkmen descent. His father was a goldsmith by trade. This is why his name means "son of the goldsmith." One of his most influential teachers was Zaynab bint Umar bin al-Kindi. She taught him in the city of Baalbek.

Al-Dhahabi was a very busy writer. He wrote nearly one hundred different works. Some of his books are quite huge. His history called Tarikh al-Islam has 50 volumes. Another famous work is Siyar A'lam al-Nubala. This biographical history has 28 volumes. He also wrote about the history of medicine. That book looked at Greek and Indian practices. It also included the work of scholars like Ibn Sina. He even wrote a dictionary about the Companions of Muhammad.

His work lived on long after he passed away. Al-Dhahabi died on February 3, 1348. He lost his sight two years before his death. He left behind three children. His daughter was named Amat al-'Aziz. He had two sons named 'Abd Allah and Abu Hurayra 'Abd al-Rahman. His son Abu Hurayra became a teacher too. He taught famous scholars like Ibn Hajar.
