Doctrine

philosophy religion Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A doctrine is a collection of teachings or instructions. It is a way to organize many ideas into one group. People use this word to describe the main points of a belief system. It can also describe a branch of knowledge. Think of it as a guide for what people believe or how they should act. This word comes from a Greek word that means teaching.

In religion, doctrine describes the core principles of a faith. Different groups have different ways of sharing these ideas. Some people use a holy book to find their doctrine. For example, many Protestants look only to the Bible. Other groups follow the writings of Church Fathers. These ideas are sometimes explained in a short book called a catechism.

In Hinduism, people look to the idea of Yuga. In Buddhism, followers learn the Four Noble Truths. Jainism has a teaching called Syādvāda.

Doctrine is also used in the world of law and politics. A legal doctrine is a set of rules that grow over time. These rules help judges make decisions in court. One example is the doctrine of frustration of purpose. This is part of the larger area called contract law. In politics, doctrine is a set of ideas about governing. It is a way to talk about how a country should work. It focuses on ideas rather than just taking action.

Military leaders also use the word doctrine to plan for war. It is a standard way to use troops and weapons. This helps soldiers know how to act during an attack. Some examples include hit-and-run tactics or trench warfare. During the Cold War, leaders used strategic doctrines to manage tension. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter announced the Carter Doctrine. It said that Soviet actions in the Persian Gulf would be a danger to the United States.

Even the word "doctor" is linked to this idea. The title means someone has the authority to teach in a field. When someone earns a doctorate, they gain this special status. A sociologist named Mervin Verbit also studied how doctrine works in religion. He said doctrine has four parts: content, frequency, intensity, and centrality. These parts show how much a belief matters to a person. Understanding doctrine helps us see how people organize their thoughts.
