The Council of Chalcedon was a massive meeting for the Christian Church. It was the fourth ecumenical council ever held. An ecumenical council is a large meeting of church leaders from many different places. This meeting was called by the Roman emperor Marcian. It took place in the city of Chalcedon in Bithynia. Today, that place is known as Kadıköy in Istanbul, Turkey.

The council lasted from October 8 to November 1 in the year 451.

The main goal was to settle big arguments about the nature of Jesus. Some people had very different ideas about how he was both God and man. One group, called Nestorianism, saw these two parts as separate. Another group, called monophysitism, believed Jesus was only divine. A monk named Eutyches taught that the human and divine parts merged into one.

This caused many disagreements among the leaders of the church.

Before this meeting, there was a very difficult time. In 449, a meeting was held in Ephesus that some called a "robber council." During that meeting, there was much conflict and even violence. Some accounts say a mob attacked a leader named Flavian. Because of this, Pope Leo I was very unhappy with the results.

The new emperor Marcian wanted to fix these problems and bring peace.

The council at Chalcedon was a huge event with many people. Over 520 bishops or their representatives attended the meeting. It was the largest and best-documented of the first seven ecumenical councils. The leaders met in the church of St. Euphemia.

They worked to approve important statements like the Creed of Nicaea and the Tome of Pope Leo I. They wanted to make sure everyone understood the same truths.

At the end, the leaders wrote the Chalcedonian Definition. This document stated that Jesus is perfect in both his divinity and his humanity. He is actually God and actually man at the same time. This decision changed the direction of the church forever. However, it also caused a split. Some groups, like the Oriental Orthodox Church, did not agree with the decision. They went their own way to form different churches.
