He held these roles from June 21, 1963, until his death on August 6, 1978. Born Giovanni Battista Enrico Antonio Maria Montini on September 26, 1897, in Concesio, Italy, he entered a life of religious service early. He was ordained a priest on May 29, 1920, in Brescia.

His leadership was defined by managing deep institutional changes and navigating the complexities of the mid-20th century. He is remembered for his role in modernizing the Church and his efforts toward global diplomacy.

Montini's career was built within the Roman Curia, which is the administrative apparatus of the Holy See.

He spent many years in the Secretariat of State, working closely with Pope Pius XII. In 1937, he became the Substitute for Ordinary Affairs under Cardinal Luigi Maglione. This role functioned much like a chief of staff for the papacy. During World War II, Montini managed vital humanitarian tasks. He helped establish an information office to assist people separated by the conflict. This office handled nearly ten million requests and provided over eleven million replies regarding missing persons.

Beyond administrative duties, Montini played a significant role in wartime relief efforts. He helped found the Pontifical Commission for Assistance to support refugees and those in need. In 1944, this commission distributed nearly two million portions of free food in Rome alone. He also worked to extend Church asylum to various groups, including displaced persons and soldiers. However, historical documents from 2011 show he also participated in complex political activities. These records indicate he worked with certain figures to plan anti-communist efforts in Africa. He also cooperated with American intelligence services, such as the OSS and the CIA, regarding Italian politics.

This position placed him in charge of 1,000 churches and 2,500 priests. He was responsible for the spiritual care of approximately 3,500,000 people. During his time in Milan, he focused on labor issues and the building of over 100 new churches. He viewed these structures as essential spaces for spiritual rest in a modern world. His time in Milan also established his reputation as a thinker who engaged with intellectuals and artists. He was known for his ecumenical interest, reaching out to members of other faiths.

After the death of Pope John XXIII, Montini was elected as his successor in 1963.

He chose the regnal name Paul VI. His primary mission was to continue and implement the mandates of the Second Vatican Council. He reconvened the council after it had been suspended during the interregnum, the period between popes. Paul VI had to balance the conflicting expectations of many different Catholic groups. He worked to ensure the council's reforms were integrated into the life of the Church. These reforms were among the most significant and wide-reaching in Catholic history.

Paul VI was also a pioneer in papal travel and global engagement.

In January 1964, he flew to Jordan, marking the first time a reigning pope had left Italy in over a century. He traveled to various sacred sites and met with leaders from different religious traditions. This included visits to Israel and Nazareth.

He also focused heavily on Marian devotion, issuing three encyclicals on the subject. Throughout his papacy, he advocated for the poor, calling for wealth redistribution from the North to the Third World. He described himself as a humble servant of a humanity that was often suffering.

In the years following his death, the Catholic Church moved toward formal recognition of his life. Pope Benedict XVI declared him venerable in 2012, noting his heroic virtue. In 2014, Pope Francis beatified him after a miracle was attributed to his intercession. Finally, Paul VI was canonized as a saint on October 14, 2018.
