Baudouin lived through many major changes in history. He was a central figure during the end of Belgian colonial rule. His life also involved significant political struggles within his own country. He is remembered as a monarch who connected Belgium to the wider world.

Baudouin's childhood was marked by several difficult events. In 1934, his grandfather, King Albert I, died in a rock climbing accident. This made the four-year-old Baudouin the Duke of Brabant. He was the heir apparent to the throne. In 1935, his mother, Princess Astrid, died in a car accident in Switzerland. His father, Leopold III, later remarried Mary Lilian Baels. Baudouin and his siblings maintained a close relationship with their stepmother.

World War II caused great disruption for the Belgian royal family. Nazi Germany invaded Belgium on May 10, 1940. Baudouin and his siblings were sent to France and then to Spain for safety. After the Belgian Army surrendered on May 28, 1940, Leopold III remained in Belgium. He was placed under house arrest at the Palace of Laeken. In 1944, the royal family was moved to Germany and then to Austria. They were eventually released in May 1945 by the United States 106th Cavalry Regiment.

After the war, a period known as the "Royal Question" occurred. This was a debate over whether Leopold III should return to the throne. Parliamentary dissent and public protests eventually forced a change. Leopold III delegated his powers to Baudouin in 1950. Baudouin officially took the oath of office as King on July 17, 1951. He ruled alongside his wife, Queen Fabiola, whom he married in 1960.

A major turning point in his reign was the independence of the Congo in 1960.

During the ceremony, Baudouin praised King Leopold II as a "genius." This caused immediate conflict with Patrice Lumumba, the first democratically elected prime minister of the Congo. Lumumba gave a speech criticizing the Belgian regime for slavery and killings. Later, a 2001 parliamentary investigation found that Baudouin knew about a plot to harm Lumumba. The investigation stated the King did nothing to stop the assassination of Lumumba.

Baudouin was a prominent figure in international diplomacy. He attended the state funerals of American presidents John F. Kennedy and Dwight D. Eisenhower.
