He was widely regarded as one of the finest dramatic performers in European cinema. Throughout his long career, he collaborated with many influential auteur directors. An auteur is a director with a unique, recognizable style. These directors included François Truffaut, Claude Chabrol, and Éric Rohmer. He also worked with Krzysztof Kieślowski and Michael Haneke. Trintignant's work helped define the landscape of classic European film.

Trintignant's journey into acting began after a period of study. He originally intended to study law at Aix-Marseille University. However, he soon discovered a deep interest in the dramatic arts. He moved to Paris at age 20 to study drama. He made his theatrical debut in 1951. After touring with several theater productions, he made his first motion picture appearance in 1955. His career was later interrupted by mandatory military service in Algiers. Upon his return to Paris, he resumed his work in film.

His rise to stardom occurred through several breakthrough performances. In 1956, he gained fame in the film And God Created Woman. He later took a romantic role in the 1966 film A Man and a Woman. This film was a massive commercial success internationally for many years. He also starred in notable works like The Conformist in 1970. In 1994, he appeared in Three Colours: Red. His career spanned many decades and various film genres. He remained active in the industry well into his later years.

Trintignant's acting was marked by high levels of professional skill. He often chose film projects based on the director's reputation. He praised Michael Haneke for having a complete mastery of cinematic discipline. This mastery includes technical aspects like sound and photography. He also noted Haneke's skill in handling actors. This careful approach led to significant successes. Trintignant won the 2013 César Award for Best Actor for his role in Amour. This film was written specifically for him by Haneke.

He received numerous prestigious international awards for his performances. In 1968, he won the Silver Bear for Best Actor at the Berlin International Film Festival. This award was for his role in The Man Who Lies. In 1969, he won the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival. This honor was for his performance in the film Z. He also received the European Film Award for Best Actor. Other honors included the Lumière Awards and the London Film Critics Circle Award. These prizes recognized his impact on global cinema.

Trintignant came from a family with a strong connection to automobile racing. His uncle, Maurice Trintignant, was a Formula One driver. Maurice won the Monaco Grand Prix twice and won the 24 Hours of Le Mans. His other uncle, Louis Trintignant, was also a racecar driver. Jean-Louis himself was an enthusiastic amateur rally driver. He competed in the World Rally Championship during the 1970s and 1980s. In 1981, he finished first in his class at the Monte Carlo Rally. This background led Claude Lelouch to cast him as a driver in A Man and a Woman.

His personal life included both professional legacy and significant loss. His daughter, Marie Trintignant, became a successful actress herself. She performed in the film La terrazza alongside her father. Tragically, Marie died in 2003. Trintignant also faced health challenges in his final years. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2018.
