He was born as Gioacchino Pecci in 1810 in Carpineto Romano. This town is located near Rome in Italy. He was the sixth of seven children in his family. His father was a count and a colonel in the French Army. As a young boy, Leo enjoyed writing poems in Latin.

He later studied law and theology to prepare for a life of service.

Leo XIII became the Pope in 1878. He led the Church until he died in 1903. This was one of the longest reigns in history.

He was the first Pope who did not control the Papal States. This was because those lands had been lost by 1870. During his time, he wrote 86 different letters called encyclicals. These letters helped explain what the Church believed about the world.
