Christian democracy is a way of thinking about how to lead a country. It uses ideas from Christian social teaching to help solve problems in society. These ideas come from many different groups. Some come from Catholic teachings, while others come from the Neo-Calvinist tradition. Later, groups like Lutherans and Pentecostals also joined in. This way of thinking helps leaders decide how to act in politics. It tries to find a balance between different needs in a community.

There are two main ideas that guide how Christian democrats work. The first is called sphere sovereignty. This means that different parts of life have their own special jobs. For example, the state should not tell a family how to raise their children. The second idea is called subsidiarity. This means that problems should be handled by local people first. Only higher levels of government should step in if the local group cannot fix it. These two ideas help keep different parts of society independent.

This movement has a long and busy history. During the nineteenth century, leaders wanted to connect Catholicism with democracy. They also wanted to help the working class during the time of capitalism. In the twentieth century, Christian democrats helped build modern welfare states in Europe. They even helped create the European Union after the war. In Eastern Europe, these groups gained support after the time of communist rule. They helped people facing corruption and stagnation.

Christian democrats have many different views on money and rules. They often support a social market economy. This means they like a market where people can trade, but they want some rules. These rules help create a social security system to protect people. In Europe, many of these parties are considered center-right. However, in Latin America, they can be more left-leaning or right-leaning. For example, the Christian Democratic Party in Chile is more left-leaning. The National Action Party in Mexico is more right-leaning.

Many famous groups follow these ideas today. In Germany, there is the Christian Democratic Union. The Dutch Christian Democratic Appeal is another big group. You can also find parties like The Centre in Switzerland and the Spanish People's Party. In the Americas, many parties belong to the Christian Democrat Organization of America. These groups care about human rights and the value of every person. They also believe in stewardship, which means protecting the planet for the future.
