Christian democracy is a political ideology based on Christian social teaching. It seeks to address the complex challenges of modern society and politics. This movement draws from many different religious traditions. It primarily uses Catholic social teaching and neo-scholasticism. It also incorporates the Neo-Calvinist tradition. Over time, it has gained support from Lutherans and Pentecostals. This ideology is not just about religion. It is a framework for how people live together in a community.

Two core concepts guide how Christian democrats view the world. The first is sphere sovereignty. This idea suggests that different parts of society have their own unique duties. These spheres include the family, the economy, and the state. One sphere should not control another. For instance, the state should not dictate how a family raises its children. The second concept is subsidiarity. This principle states that social issues should be handled at the lowest possible level. Only higher levels of government should step in when local groups cannot solve a problem. Together, these ideas protect the independence of various social groups.

Christian democracy has a deep philosophical history. Many ideas come from the thinker Thomas Aquinas. He believed human rights are based on natural law. Natural law includes things humans need to function, like food. Aquinas also taught that all humans have equal dignity because they are made in the image of the divine. Later, the neo-scholastic movement helped revive these ideas. Jacques Maritain was a key figure in this era. He worked to reconcile democracy and human rights with these religious principles. He also argued that the state must help if people do not use their property correctly to help others.

Another important influence is Neo-Calvinism. This tradition relies on the ideas of John Calvin. It emphasizes the sovereignty of God. This helped create the idea of sphere sovereignty. This concept was very important for Reformed Christians who were often in the minority. In this view, every part of life is religious. Therefore, politics should reflect these spiritual values. This helps ensure that the state pursues public justice while respecting other social roles.

In the nineteenth century, the movement focused on three main goals. Leaders wanted to reconcile Catholicism with democratic systems. They also sought to answer the "social question" regarding capitalism and the working class. Additionally, they wanted to resolve tensions between the church and the state. During the twentieth century, Christian democrats played a massive role in Europe. They helped build modern welfare states in Western and Southern Europe. They were also instrumental in constructing the European Union. In Eastern Europe, they gained support after the fall of communist states. They helped nations struggling with corruption and stagnation.

Economically, Christian democrats often support a social market economy. This system features a slightly regulated market. It includes an effective social security system to protect citizens. On the political spectrum, their position can vary. In Europe, they are often considered centre-right. They belong to groups like the European People's Party. However, in Latin America, positions differ. The Christian Democratic Party in Chile is more left-leaning. The National Action Party in Mexico is more right-leaning. This shows how the ideology adapts to different national contexts.

Many major political parties follow these principles today. In Germany, the Christian Democratic Union is a primary example. Other notable parties include the Dutch Christian Democratic Appeal and the Spanish People's Party. In Switzerland, The Centre is a significant group. The movement also includes the Mexican National Action Party and the Christian Democratic Party of Chile. These parties often emphasize human rights and individual initiative. They also practice stewardship. This is the idea that humans must safeguard the planet for future generations.
