Lake Pátzcuaro

geography Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Lake Pátzcuaro is a beautiful lake in Michoacán, Mexico. It sits inside a large basin. A basin is a low area of land. This basin was made by volcanoes long ago. Steep mountains rise up around the water. The lake is 2,035 meters high. It is an endorheic basin. This means the water does not flow to the sea. The water stays inside the land. The lake is 126.4 square kilometers in size.

Large wetlands grow all around the lake. These wet areas are called a Ramsar site. Tall plants like cattails grow in dense stands. Some of these plants grow over 2 meters tall. These wetlands are very important for many birds. Almost 200 kinds of birds live here. Some birds stay all year. Others fly there for a short time. You might see the black-polled yellowthroat there. This is a special bird that lives only in this area.

Many unique animals live in the water. The Lake Pátzcuaro salamander lives only in this basin. You can also find the Pátzcuaro chub fish. There are special turtles and snakes here too. A small creature called a dwarf crayfish lives in the lake. Some animals are hard to find now. The yellow rail has not been seen since 1964. The slender-billed grackle is also thought to be gone.

This area has a very long history. The Purépecha people live in this basin. They built a strong state here. This state was a rival to the Aztec Empire. Important towns like Tzintzuntzan were centers for them. You can still see ancient temple ruins called yacatas. Many towns sit along the shore today. Pátzcuaro is on the southeast side. Quiroga is a busy market town.

The lake has changed a lot lately. People use water for farming and cities. This has made the lake smaller. It is now 40 square kilometers smaller than before. Logging and farming also cause silt to fill the lake. This happens at a rate of 1 centimeter every year. Many studies have looked at the lake since 1934. People want to help keep the water clean. There are also many islands to explore. Janitzio is an island where people visit. Pacanda is the largest and flattest island.
