It was the second-largest state in its region during the time of the Spanish conquest. This kingdom covered much of what is now the state of Michoacán. It also reached parts of Jalisco, Guanajuato, and Guerrero. The people living there were known as the Purépecha. Some people also called them the Tarascan Empire. The name Michoacán actually means "place of fish owners" in the Nahua language.

The empire worked through a system of many connected groups. These groups sent gifts and goods to the central leaders. This is called a tributary system. The leaders were called the Irecha, which means "king." A woman could also lead and was called a Kuhcha. Over time, the kingdom became more centralized. This means the main leaders had more control over the different areas. They even built a group of workers to help run the government. This helped the empire stay organized as it grew larger.

The history of this empire began in the early 14th century. A visionary leader named Tariácuri started it all. Around the year 1300, he gathered many small communities together. He wanted to make one strong state around Lake Pátzcuaro. Tariácuri's sons, Hiripan and Tangáxuan, helped him lead. They became lords of the cities of Ihuatzio and Tzintzuntzan. Tzintzuntzan was the capital city. Its name means "place of hummingbirds."

The empire lasted until the Spanish arrived in 1530. In 1543, it officially became the governorship of Michoacán.

The Purépecha were very different from their neighbors like the Aztecs. They were one of the few groups to use metal for tools and weapons.

They also fought many wars to protect their borders from the Aztec Empire. The Purépecha were very good at defending their land. They even let other groups settle on their borders to help with defense. Between 1480 and 1510, they occupied parts of Colima and Jalisco. They did this to secure mines that held a mineral called nitratine. This shows how much they cared about protecting their resources.

Religion was a very important part of daily life for the Purépecha. They worshipped many different gods called Tukúpacha. One important goddess was Kweráwahpiri, who was the goddess of rain. People believed she sent rain through the steam of hot springs. Another goddess was Xarhátanha, the goddess of maize.

She was said to wear a crown made of chilies. The Purépecha also had a creator named Kurhiti K'éri. He was known as the messenger of the gods. These stories helped the people understand the world around them.
