It sits in northern and central Mexico. This land is mostly dry. It has many deserts and shrubs.

The plateau has two main parts. The northern part is called the Mesa del Norte. It goes from the United States border down through many states. This area has many ridges and low spots. The Chihuahuan Desert is also here.

The southern part is called the Mesa Central. It is higher than the northern part. This area has many valleys. Long ago, these valleys were large lakes. Many big cities live in these valleys. You can find Mexico City and Guadalajara here.

Water moves in different ways on the plateau. Some rivers flow to the Gulf of Mexico. Other rivers flow west into the Pacific Ocean. Some parts of the land do not flow to the sea at all. High mountains surround the edges. These mountains have pine and oak forests. The forests grow on the high ground.
