Many parts of the state have a humid and tropical climate. In the north, near Tabasco, it rains very heavily. This area used to have huge, tall rainforests. Today, many of those trees have been cleared for farms and ranches.

Near the coast, people grow crops like bananas in the wet soil. In the center, tall mountain ranges run across the land. These mountains are often foggy and cool. They host beautiful cloud forests like the Reserva de la Biosfera El Triunfo.

Hunter-gatherers lived in the central valley around 7000 BCE. Later, the Mokaya people began growing corn around 1500 BCE. They were one of the oldest civilizations in the area. The famous Maya civilization also grew here during the Classic period. They built grand cities and studied math and stars.

Most of these ancient cities fell apart around 900 CE.

Spanish explorers arrived in the area in 1522.

They met many different groups of people living there. Some groups, like the Tzotzil, fought hard to protect their homes. The Spanish eventually established cities like San Cristóbal de las Casas in 1528.

Chiapas has a very interesting political history.

Because the mountains made travel difficult, the state was often isolated. After Spain lost control of Mexico in 1821, Chiapas faced many choices. Some leaders wanted to join Mexico, while others wanted to join Central America.
