San Luis Potosí is one of the 32 states in Mexico. It sits in the eastern and central parts of the country. Many other Mexican states surround it, including Nuevo León to the north and Zacatecas to the northwest. To the east, it meets the state of Veracruz. You can also find Hidalgo, Querétaro, and Guanajuato along its southern borders. The state is divided into 59 municipalities, which are areas similar to counties. Its name comes from its capital city, which is also called San Luis Potosí.

The land in this state changes a lot depending on where you stand. Much of the state sits on the high Mexican Plateau, where the ground is mostly level. Large mountain ridges, called the Sierra Madre Oriental, run north and south through the area. These mountains separate the high plateau from the flat coastal plains to the east. In the eastern part, you will find the tropical valley of the Tampaon River. This area is known as the Huasteca potosina. It is a lush region with moist forests that stay green and wet.

History tells us that many different groups lived here long ago. Before Spanish explorers arrived, the land was home to the Otomi and Chichimeca tribes. These people were nomadic hunter-gatherers, meaning they moved around to find food. In 1592, people found gold and silver in the ground. This discovery led to the start of the state. Spanish miners built the first town, which was called San Luis de Mezquitique. The state was named after King Saint Louis of France and a rich mining place in Bolivia.

Mining has been a very important job in San Luis Potosí for a long time. Some places, like Real de Catorce, have some of the richest silver mines in Mexico. Other districts like Peñón Blanco and Ramos also find valuable metals. Miners look for many things, including gold, copper, zinc, and lead. Because of this, the state is a leader in metallurgy, which is the study of metals. Other big industries include making food, drinks, and textiles. The state is also a great place for business because it sits near major cities like Mexico City and Monterrey.

Nature is also a big part of life in the state. There are many protected areas, such as El Potosí National Park. Some places are very special to the Huichol people, like the mountain of Wirikuta. This mountain is a sacred site for their ceremonies and dances. Because it is so important, UNESCO has helped protect it as a cultural route. People also work the land in different ways. In the high areas, they grow wheat and beans. In the warm valleys, they grow sugar, coffee, and fruit.
